Description:

Neurosurgeon M. Kamran Khan, D.O. with Endeavor Health Neurosciences Institute presents "Navigating Neck Pain: A Neurosurgeon’s Guide to Managing Cervical Spondylotic Radiculopathy/Myelopathy (CSR/CSM) with OT Care Pre- and Post-operatively.”  Cervical degenerative disc disease mainly occurs in the aging population. A majority of Americans over 60 have degenerative disc disease in their neck, and it has increasing morbidity, potentially leading to poor quality of life and disability. Patients often present with quiescent and insidious symptoms and can develop a stepwise decline or rapid deterioration. Mild cases involve a conservative approach while moderate to severe cases have patients considering surgical options. Occupational therapists play a crucial role in helping spine patients regain function, adapt to physical limitations, and optimize their recovery both preoperatively and postoperatively.

Dr. Khan will note how he works with occupational therapists so they educate and prepare patients for surgery. He also highlights how prehabilitation exercises as well as proper postural alignment and core engagement techniques support stabilizing the spine. Postoperatively, Dr. Khan shows how rehabilitation and functional recovery impacts patient outcomes. In both phases, occupational therapists work closely with the healthcare team to tailor interventions to the patient’s specific needs, promoting recovery and a safe return to daily life. This evidence-based presentation is relevant to occupational therapists as it reviews the current standard of care for a growing number of patients with cervical degenerative disc disease.

Objectives:
    • Note the natural history of the management of CSR/CSM
    • Recognize the clinical presentation of a patient with CSR/CSM
    • Evaluate the different surgical options & post-operative OT care for CSR/CSM
