Course Description:

Rehabilitative specialists and support service providers in the schools are starting to take on more leadership roles requiring responsibilities in management, program development, mentoring students and staff, as well as positions of leadership in the community through nontraditional practices. Many of these individuals create professional goals to increase coaching and leadership strengths with little knowledge on where to turn for direct skill development. Sarah Young, along with the Leadership Development Program (LDP) team, will explore a unique approach to coaching and leadership that can be used in everyday moments, regardless of your formal title.

This virtual seminar will  begin with Sarah, who will guide participants through several approaches to coaching and mentoring using concepts described in her book, Expansive Impact: An Invitation to Lead in Everyday Moments. The second half of the seminar will continue with members of the Leadership Development Program leading discussions on the challenges and opportunities of implementing the ideas in everyday clinical practice.

Participants will leave this session with:
  • Practical ideas to create connections and build relationships in everyday moments, in ways that don't require a lot of time or energy
  • Methods to put our values into action in our leadership and our lives
  • An increased understanding of internal thought patterns that might be getting in our way—and how to set them aside
  • Ways to ask better questions, to get better information during mentoring and advising
  • An understanding of our natural style of leadership and communication as it relates to conflict
  • A framework for taking action on the things we care about through small and intentional action
Breakout Sessions:

Following Sarah's presentation from 9:00 am to 10:00 am, seminar registrants will participate in two separate breakout sessions - one from 10:00 am to 11:00 am and the other from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm. The breakout sessions will be focused on a particular invitation from the book, so that you can dive deeper into whichever section feels most helpful to you at this time. Each breakout time block will offer three options for registrants, based on the chapters of the book. During the online registration process, registrants will be invited to choose among the three breakout options for each time block.

Here are the breakout sessions and options:

10:00 am to 11:00 am Breakout:
  • Be Compassionate: Lead with Love
  • Be Conscious: Lead from Within
  • Be Clear: Lead in Relationship to Reality
11:00 am to 12:00 pm Breakout:
  • Be Curious: Lead by Looking for Clues
  • Be Courageous: Lead with Truth from the Heart
  • Be Creative: Lead with Agility

Additional Information about Sarah Young and the ILOTA Leadership Development Program:

The Leadership Development Program was established to provide members of ILOTA with leadership training and ongoing mentorship, a unique path to developing leadership skills in Illinois by establishing mentor-mentee cohorts, as well as outcome-focused educational programs, to enable selected candidates to build a foundation of skills in leadership regardless of their field of endeavor. It accomplishes this by bringing individuals with a high degree of leadership skills together with those with less experience but who share a passion for personal and professional growth in leading. The Leadership Development Program offers avenues for Occupational Therapy practitioners who are leading and assisting others in their work, as well as for clinicians looking for ways to further their professional development to advance the growth of occupational therapy in Illinois.
