Description:

Focusing on common injuries among the pediatric population—the upper extremity—Dr. San Juan examines fracture patterns of the forearm and elbow, treatment, and outcomes following immobilization or surgical intervention. She also notes the role occupational therapy plays in improving function following such injuries.

Forearm fractures account for 17.8% of all fractures, and elbow fractures account for 5-10% of all fractures in children. Dr. San Juan will review the most common fracture types of the forearm and elbow and when treatment with cast immobilization or surgical intervention is appropriate. The length of immobilization and the decision to proceed with surgery can have varying effects on the patient’s overall mobility and quality of life after treatment.

This evidence-based presentation is relevant as it reviews the current standard of care for treating pediatric forearm and elbow fractures and the post-treatment recovery and rehabilitation. Occupational therapy can restore range of motion sooner than observation alone. The presentation will cite research from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics.

Objectives:
1. Know the most common pediatric elbow and forearm fractures and be able to identify the typical presentation of these fractures, the characteristics of each fracture type, associated injuries, and possible complications.
2. Identify when immobilization versus surgical intervention is indicated.

3. Identify the role of a structured rehabilitation program to store standard elbow, forearm, and wrist kinematics and function
