Description:

This course is aimed at helping healthcare practitioners, including occupational therapy practitioners, feel more comfortable and competent in providing holistic, culturally responsive care for trans and gender-diverse people. In this course, you will learn about gender expansiveness, explore client-centered and strengths-based approaches to care, and discover the benefits of providing gender-affirming care as it relates to the quality of life and well-being of this population. This course is a great opportunity for any healthcare practitioners or individuals who would like to learn more about gender expansiveness within the context of healthcare settings.

Course Objectives:

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand terminology related to gender and gender expansiveness
  • Understand what gender-affirming care entails and how occupational therapy practitioners can provide holistic, client-centered care
  • Examine how to establish a safe and welcoming environment for transgender and gender diverse populations within healthcare settings
  • Learn specific strategies for client-centeredness and support
  • Consider the benefits of utilizing a strengths-based lens versus a deficits-based lens for treatment
  • Understand the importance of providing gender-affirming care as it relates to quality of life and well-being for our clients
